Service Areas

Service Areas helps your office organize the ZIP codes you serve into named territories. Give each area a travel charge and estimated travel time, then look up a customer's ZIP to see its assigned area.

Available now: Service Areas is an active, installable plugin. It does not enforce coverage when booking work: an out-of-area job can still be booked. Travel charges are area details, not a promise that a quote or invoice will add them automatically.

When to use this

Use areas to keep territory names, ZIP coverage, and travel details in one place when your team quotes or dispatches work. For example, an office manager can check whether a new customer's ZIP is assigned before discussing travel with them.

Before you start

  • You need access to Service Areas. A teammate who manages plugins can install it from Marketplace if it is not already available in your workspace.
  • Ask a teammate with permission to manage Service Areas if you cannot add or edit an area. Changing plugin settings requires write access.
  • Decide which ZIP codes belong to each territory. A ZIP can belong to only one service area at a time.

Create an area and assign ZIP codes

  1. Open Service Areas and select New Area.
  2. Enter a Name. Optionally add a description, color, travel charge, and travel time; choose Active or Inactive.
  3. Select Create Area. ZIP codes are attached after the area is created.
  4. Expand the new area's card, enter a ZIP under ZIP Codes, and select Add. Repeat for the other ZIPs in that area.
  5. Use Look Up A Zip at the top of the page to check which area covers a particular ZIP. If none is assigned, the page says so.

Select Edit on an area to update its details or status. Its ZIP assignments remain as they were; expand the card to add or remove individual ZIPs.

Defaults and coverage settings

Open Service Areas → Settings to set the default travel charge, travel time, and zone color for new areas. These defaults do not rewrite existing areas. The settings page also offers an out-of-area behavior choice, but coverage is not enforced in booking today. Do not rely on that choice to block work outside your territory.

Removing an area

Select Delete on the area and confirm only when you no longer need it. Deleting the area also removes its ZIP assignments; those ZIPs will no longer return that area in the lookup. To keep the area but stop using it, edit its status to Inactive instead. Removing a single ZIP from an expanded card leaves the area itself in place.

Troubleshooting

  • A ZIP cannot be added: Check whether it is already assigned to another area. Remove it there before assigning it to the intended area.
  • The lookup finds no area: Check the exact ZIP entered and the assignments under your area cards. No match does not prevent you from booking work.
  • Areas do not load: Retry from the error shown on the page. Do not treat a load error as proof that your workspace has no areas.
  • Settings are unavailable: Ask a teammate with Service Areas write permission to review them.
  • Scheduling — plan visits and assignments.
  • Quotes — prepare customer estimates; review travel terms before sending.
  • Plugin guides — find other available add-ons and roadmap guides.
